Wang Yi Talks about Four-Point Consensus of China-Germany Diplomatic and Security Strategic Dialogue
2020/02/14

On February 13 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi co-chaired the China-Germany Diplomatic and Security Strategic Dialogue with his German counterpart Heiko Maas before jointly meeting the press. Wang Yi pointed out four important consensus reached in the dialogue.

Wang Yi said that Foreign Minister Maas and him co-chaired the China-Germany Diplomatic and Security Strategic Dialogue and reached a series of important consensus.

First, common interests between China and Germany far outweigh differences. As long as both sides respect each other, fully accommodate each other's core interests and concerns, and continuously cement and build up mutual political trust, our two countries are fully able to achieve long-term stability and sound development in the bilateral relations, and our comprehensive strategic partnership will be elevated to a new level.

Second, complementary advantages and mutual benefits are the fundamentals of Sino-German relations. Our two countries should stay committed to open and win-win cooperation. By turning competition into mutual benefits, we can make "1+1>2" the constant model of Sino-German cooperation. China will continue to open our doors wider, and we expect fair and equitable treatment for Chinese companies from the German side. China appreciates Germany's adherence to its independent position on 5G. The two sides will also conduct more third-party cooperation under the Belt and Road framework.

Third, China and Germany should lead the way in China-Europe relations. This year will mark a number of major political events between China and Europe. China is ready to work with Germany to expedite negotiations on the China-EU Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) and formulate a five-year agenda for China-EU cooperation. In particular, more outcomes should be achieved in upholding multilateralism and improving global governance to send positive messages to the world.

Fourth, as countries with major influence in the world, China and Germany should strengthen international coordination and contribute to world peace and development. We will further step up cooperation in regional and international affairs. China stands ready to support Germany in playing a positive part in its capacity as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. China is ready to better coordinate with Germany under G20 and other frameworks to defend the international and multilateral system centered on the UN and defend the free trade system underpinned by the WTO. Both sides will also work in concert towards political resolution of hotspot issues including Libya and the Iranian nuclear issue.
